Grade 4: Habitats and Communities Inquiry Process
Going through habitats and communities with the class we would choose a class animal and research together the habitat and food chain of our animal. We would discuss things like where the animal lives and what it needs to survive.
While doing habitats and communities with a grade 4 classroom, I would allow the students to choose an animal and enjoy the process of learning about their chosen animals habitats, needs, and food chain on their own. They would be allowed to choose their own animal and do their own research.
I chose a panda. I had to research the 4 main components of my creatures habitat. I had to find the food chain and make sure it was part of the habitat. To start, I had to write down all the components on an outline. Then I drew a picture of the animal in its habitat including all the components and food chain. To extend the activity even more, I made a quick habitat out of craft materials.

Allowing the students to be independent and do their own research, especially in grade 4, lets them get ready for middle school and the independence they will need there. There would be criteria and a timeline to follow but other than that the students would have their own time to work on their projects.
