Litter in Our Neighbourhood
SLO 4-1-14 – Investigate natural and human-caused changes to habitats, and identify resulting effects on plant and animal populations.
SLO 4-1-15 – Describe how their actions can help conserve plant and animal populations and their habitats.
Here are three resources I would use to help teach this lesson:
Litter We Know – This resource would get the kids out of the classroom and allow them to make their own impact, no matter how small, on their community around them.
Raia and the Eco Guardians – This resource would show students that no matter their age or ability, they are able to make a difference in the world around them.
Clean Up the Environment – Since this topic is covered in grade 4, this activity allows the students to look at what can happen if we don’t take care of our community. This is a way to get them thinking about the bigger world around them outside of themselves.
Another idea would be take the students to Fort Whyte Alive to see what the natural habitat can look like when humans don’t disturb it. The students will see the beauty of nature around them and hopefully grow a deeper connection to nature than they had before.
